Once upon a time, back around 1978,
Radio Glen came into being at the Glen Eyre Halls of Residence
in Southampton. Here are some of my memories from 1990 to 1993,
and a few from a bit later too. As seen in the above picture,
the original frequency was 312m or 963kHz, later 1602 kHz 188m
(actually closer to 187m, but 188 metres sounds better) and
finally on 1 Watt free radiating LPAM 1287 kHz 233m, briefly as
Radio Glen and thenceforth SURGE, originally standing for the
compromise acronym Southampton University Radio from Glen
Eyre.
A look at the original Studio 1
mixing desk in the F-Block laundry.
The only known recordings of the
wobbly jingle carts made sometime in the 1980's, and still in
use from 1989 to 1993.
Some experiences and tales of the
"Abbey Road" BTR-3 Stereo
Some secondary pieces of kit that I
cobbled together for the station. Some of it even
worked. Also included are some artists impressions of
original equipment.
